Elevation of body temperature, usually by 1-4 degree celsius, is one of the prominent manifestations of acute phase response, especially when inflammation is caused by infection.
Fever is produced in response to substance called pyrogens that act by stimulating prostaglandin (PG) synthesis in the vascular and perivascular cells of the hypothalamus.
Bacterial products such as liposaccharide (LPS; called exogenous pyrogens), stimulate leukocytes to release cytokines such as IL-1 and TNF (called endogenous pyrogens) that increase the levels of cyclooxygenase that covert AA into PG.
In hypothalamus, the PGs stimulate the production of neurotransmitters, which function to reset the temperature set point at a higher level. That explain how the temperature in feverish person is elevated.
